El Querandí, in brief
Before it was a tango house, this was a café and bar on Perú 322, in Monserrat — an Art Deco room of Solomonic columns, checkerboard floors and arches, built the year the neighbourhood was full of them. It ran as a bar for sixty years.
The two packages run on the same clock. Doors and dinner from 7:30pm, the cuadro on at 9:30, out by around 11.
The decades
El Querandí's cuadro doesn't perform one version of tango. Across seventy-five minutes it moves through the music's own history, era by era, in the room where much of that history was written.
Tango's beginnings on the edges of the city, before it had a stage or a script.
The years tango found a voice — Carlos Gardel and the song era the cuadro performs first.
The golden age, when tango moved indoors, into halls and ballrooms, and picked up its orchestras.
